Anandtech previews the new Dell Inspiron XPS, gamer laptop. I don't know if there is a big market for this, who really needs a 9lb laptop except for LAN gaming fan-boys? Even then, it's better to have a small Shuttle cube to go to gamer meets due to performance advantages.

<i>"Basically, it looks like an Inspiron 8600 on an elevated platform. The 15.4" WUXGA screen we saw on the beta system was stunning and more brilliant than the 8600, which quite frankly was already a great system to begin with... We have high expectations, so stay tuned."</i>

This is my notebook rig:

Sager NP5660 l 15" UXGA LCD l P4 2.4 GHz 533MHz FSB l 1024MB 266MHz DDR RAM l 64MB ATi Mobility Radeon 9000 l Logitech Cordless TrackMan Wheel Mouse l Logitech Extreme Digital 3D Joystick l XP Home SP1

When I got it in 12/02, it was one of the top performing notebooks on the market. It's still an excellent gaming platform. Even then, it cost ~$2,500. Now, rigs like the Sager 5680 and 8890, Dell Inspiron XPS, Alienware Area-51M, and Voodoopc Envy tricked out with the P4 3.4GHz EE, Dual HD RAID 0, widescreen WUXGA LCD monitors, high-end graphics cards, Bluetooth, etc., will run you upwards to $4K. But these are truly desktop replacements, nearly as powerful as high-end desktops.
