I thought the special effects were amazing, but the ending was weak and abrupt.

However I hear that it was just staying true to the book. Oh well.

I've seen the 50's movie, heard the original radio broadcast, but I have yet to read the original book.

Yeah, the first half is just packed with action and great pacing. The second...not so much. The ending was kind of weak.

I felt like I was watching matrix meets Half life 2.

very minor spoiliers:

- Am I the only one who screamed out STRIDER!!! when the tripod first came out of the ground?
- So the emp blast takes everything electronic out but yet there is a guy running around with a working camcorder? And yeah the rest of the chips in that car would have been fried too.
- No big battle scenes (like in ID4). WTF, the big battle happens behind a freakin hill? Jets, tanks, apache's fly over and you never see them again. A big explosion happens and you get one cheap ass flaming HV? Spend the damn budget and give me a big battle scene with the military getting their ass handed to them. SHEESH!!
- Tom cruise is a major fruit. I feel unclean since my ticket price is helping fund scientology.
