hi every one...im extreamly confused over which monitor to go for...
the Dell2001FP / Dell2005FPW / Dell2405FPW

im kinda confused becasue i've never had a LCD monitor...
im buiding an SLi rig...2x6800GT's
meaing im into games quite alot...
i'd prefer going for the Dell2405 over the 2005 (frankly becasue of the 2005 being as short a 17" monitor..i hope the 2405 is slightly bigger in hight)

People tell me that a wide screen monitor is'nt great for gaming becasue some games have trouble in running on high res with wide monitors(is this true) and how will browsers look if they're streatched (wont it look odd like a streached photo shop image)

Plus is the 2001 better the 2005

im into editing ,browsing the internet and playing lots and lots of games....

What should i keep as a 1st , 2nd and a 3rd choice amongst the 3

i realy do need to know..thanks...and i honestly dont know but i for some reason think wide screen feels cool...so it is cool right..is it?

ohh and another thing i've come across many that tell me not to go for Dell screens if im into gaming (why is this)
people seem to tell me to go for some other LCD monitor....

help...help...and help:D

Hi Marri.

I'd start by saying that if I could afford it I'd have bought a 2405FPW over the 2005FPW, so if money is no object, that's the wide screen of choice IMHO.

Most of the games that I've tried that don't run in widescreen will either stretch to wide (looks a bit odd but you get used to it) or they sit in the middle with two black lines on either side, which is easy to get used to.

I think the wide screen is cool, plus I think that more and more apps, games etc will become available in wide aspect, and like TVs I think computer monitors will move toward wide screen more and more over the next few years, so it's almost future-proofing (or that's what I told myself).

Personally I think the 2005 is a great gaming monitor. It has fast response times, better than most other large screens in it's price bracket at 12ms, which I believe is the same as the 2405, although I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong. It's certainly no worse than 16ms, which should be fine for gaming anyway (although 12ms would be better). I can't think why people would suggest that Dell displays are poor for gaming, unless they're anti Dell; I know a couple of them.

I believe the 2001 is a great monitor, but have no personal experience. It's a nice big monitor tho.

My personal 1 - 3 (money no object) would be:
1. 2004FPW
2. 2005FPW
3. 2001FP

It would also seem that your apps would benefit from a wide aspect display. For anyone who Photoshops alot, does Video Editing, or people that code, produce Flash etc (all of which I do), I think the wide aspect is the monitor of choice... it's revolutionised the way I work at home. I'm always rather disappointed going back to my 17" 4:3 LCD at work after I've been working from home now.

Hope that helps.

Thanks alot for the replies...double thanks :D
thanks now im clearer on which one comes in first second and so on...

Response Time...
8ms =125 frames, 12ms =88 frames, 16ms=63 frames, 25ms=40 frames

and is it important that i dont shift towards a LCD monitor...because of the response time issue...
im building a SLi system...would going towards LCDs be a bad idea...wont i get low frame rate when compaired to a CRTs results..or for that matter a much rather lower level of perofrmance..

i mean will i be wasting my SLI rig if i go towards a LCD monitor..i hope i dont...i read a few people making fun out of those with SLI+widescreen LCD's saying whats the point of doing all that if you bring it down at the same time...
i have no idea then again...

I have to be honest, I have no idea if there's a disadvantage to having an SLI rig with an LCD. I would say however, that I know several people who are very very keen on their performance and all of whom have LCDs, one of which is on an SLI system.

Ultimately I think it's all a matter of choice. If you want the best system for frame rates, then maybe you need to do more research. However, I have read that the human eye cannot see the difference between 60FPS or 1000 FPS... 60's supposed to be our limit. So if 16ms is 63 frames per second then you're pretty much at our limit, but 12ms is on the safe side for all colours etc. I wouldn't have thought you'd notice the slightest difference.

I'd also think that it depends on if you want an impressive system to look at, or performance at an athestic cost. A 24" widescreen LCD really would make your system look the mutts nuts.

The choice is yours.

I don't own SLI but I've heard multiple reports that SLI has an issue with widescreens in general - ppl fix by disabling SLI... although who knows, maybe Nvidia fixed in the latest drivers ;)

The SLI with an LCD that I know of is not a widescreen, so that could be the reason! :D

The panel used in the 2005FPW is the same as used in Apple's 20" and is very well-rated. Dell went with a cheaper, less capable panel with the 2405FPW, which puts it at a disadvantage (mostly in response time) to the Apple and HP 23" units (which have the same panel). I can only imagine Dell's 30" will use the same panel as Apple's.

The HP 23" gets excellent reviews and has come down a good deal in price. It's more expensive then the Dell, but might prove to be a better value.

That being said, any LCD without HDCP may not be suitable for HD-resolution commercial video down the road with new DRM requirements being formulated (not just in Vista, but OSX and certain Linux distros), so you may just want to wait. Dell's 30" is supposed to have HDCP so chances are new panels coming soon will probably have it, as well.
