well, I'd love to tell you guys how cool the new Source engine looks, but I'm getting the same crash-to-desktop-with no-apparent-error that about what seems like 3000 other people are getting, according to the posts on the steam forums. I start the game, i get a cool looking screen with two dudes with assault rifles, that last about 5 sec, and BAM, back to desktop. I tried running it in a window and got some weird memory error message. Leave it to Valve to release a game that doesn't even work for the majority of the people who can get it. I know it's just a beta, but that usually implies that the game will actually RUN, and then you might find some bugs during gameplay. I'm very frustrated, cuz i really wanted to see how nice the new source engine looked. Hopefully they'll have it fixed by tomorrow. Although I heard that once you can get the game running, all the servers are completely full. Anyone else actually been able to run the game???

btw, in order to get the beta you have to own CounterStrike: Condition Zero, or have a coupon for a free copy of HL2 from an ATI video card.

I want to play this game soooo bad. Looks like I will have to wait for HL2 to come out though.

i'm at work now, and noticed a possible fix for my problem. Hopefully I can play it when i get home. I'll take some screenies and post them here.

Once, when the game just froze up on me at the splash screen, i brought up the task manager. it was pretty cool to see "hl2.exe" in my tasks list!!!!

Played 4 hrs last night (from midnight to 4am)

My main issues were sometimes the server browser would hang and I would get the sending client data memory error. If I just try joining servers about 1/5 times I would actually connect. Once I was in, it was stable for me. Sometimes starting a listen server and then jumping directly into another game helped.

- played for a good 1.5 hrs on some server with a 50 ping
- with 30 people I was still getting 40+ fps (cl_showfps 1)
- I love the graphics, new gun models are awesome, the little dust particles that twinkle in the light, sound of a head shot, hitting tile/brick
- I get this crash sometimes when it says sending client info and there are 2 bars left to go.
- yeah the broken server pw sucks
- might be already an exploit. some guy on hardocp server was constantly pausing the server (simulated lag but much worse). You can tell b/c it shows up in the console.
- I like how it shows you in the console hit stats after you die. almost like statsme!

It has a lot of potential but this has been overall a pretty frustrating launch IMO.

Oh yeah video stress test 57.3
1024X768
settings on high

Played some more on a 55 player server.
The big battles are kind of fun in a chaotic sort of way. The number of bodies after a big fire fight is amazing. My framerate does take a dive though (into the 20's). I think this is more due to the sheer number of players and not so much the engine. I'm still impressed how good and relatively fast the source engine is.

Oh yeah I really like the muzzle flashes and lighting in general.

fyi I tried 800X600 and it didn't help much in the big battles. That means we aren't fillrate bound. It's something else maybe cpu.

After reading the original email it all makes sense. The way they are getting people to buy HL2 through steam is if you do that you get to play the complete CS: Source NEXT WEEK! Basically you PAY (pre-purchase) for HL2 next week and get to play cs source next week but you STILL have to wait until retail HL2 comes out (retail date point to 11/23/2004) before HL2 gets unlocked.

Very Sneaky. This has got to be some loop hole in the VU agreements Valve is exploiting. I bet it specifically talks about not releasing HL2 via steam before retail. But they are basically doing it anyways by tying in cs source (and releasing it earlier than HL2) to purchasing the full copy of HL2 over steam. Hmmm maybe this will put pressure on VU to release HL2 quickly. I mean over a month and a half lead on Steam could put a bit of hurt on retail sales.

Greedy Bastards! All of them!
.....
I guess I'll be buying HL2 over steam next week.

Same here. I'm salivating to get home and download it. But I have a feeling that Valve's servers are being hammered right now and I'll get 10k/sec download speeds.

I played for about an hour. I am very very happy. I was afraid that it will turn out to be like Doom3 where I had to dial down the settings.

Not so for CS: Source, I was able to run at 1600x1200 WITH high detail SMOOTHLY on my 2.66ghz and ATI 9700 with only shadow detail lowered.

It's awesome! The graphics and physics are great. Good stuff.

I went ahead and bought silver under a new account. You really do get ALL the old valve games.
- I like the two types of glass breaking. They still have the old one, plus a new one that fragments which you have to chip away piece by piece
- shooting fruit in the market in italy is a blast! chickens would have been even better.
- water very pretty but in a 40+ player game it really kills my fps (chateau)

I'm also surprisingly enjoying Condition Zero, the old single player game with Counterstrike missions.

i'll check it out later, rendition. My free time has pretty much gone to zero now that i work from 6 am to around 2 pm, then i have night class every night from 5:30 to 10:30. I shall suffer for about 7 months, and then I'll be certified in 8 different networking certifications and I'll be out of the navy!!! woohoo. So my only gaming time is really going to be on the weekends.

you sure that is the correct IP for the server? I tried to put it on my favorites list and nothing came up. What's the actual name of the server?
