View Full Version : Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD
It looks like Hollywood will ultimately drive the choice. Read about the competing blue-laser formats here (http://pcworld.co.nz/news.nsf/0/00B6ADAE5467DBC5CC256ECF00761FA3?OpenDocument) and post your thoughts.

I hate how this happens with EVERY single new format. Argh.. I just want HD-DVDs as soon as possible for my HDTV.

Looks like you'll have to wait a while. From what the article says, neither Blu-ray nor HD-DVD will be available at an affordable price point until near the end of the decade. So, you can figure on holding on to your present DVD player/burner for at least the next several years. About the only thing that'll change with the present DVD burner technology will be dual layer read/write speeds and the affordability of dual layer media. On the player side, there'll be more development of the DVD-A/SACD formats. Anyway, your Philips DVD963SA should be good to go for quite a while. :)

Argh.. actually I think Sony is looking at HD-DVD format for PS3. So maybe we'll get it in 2006!

I kinda find that hard to believe since Sony is the main backer of the competing Blu-ray format. But you may be right about something being available in 2006. Phillips just announced here (http://www.cdfreaks.com/news/10136) the development of an optical pick-up unit that'll read and write all of the present DVD formats as well as the Blu-ray format. They want to start mass production in 2006. It'll probably be pretty pricey though.

You may be right. According to this article (http://www.forbes.com/technology/feeds/infoimaging/2004/07/15/infoimagingbhsuper_2004_07_14_JIJI_0000-2619-KEYWORD.Missing.html), Sony will be setting up production lines in the US this fall to test produce Blu-ray discs. It would seem to make sense that Sony would want to use next-generation technology for PS3.
