Angry Intern, do you go on long trips when on the ship?

TheAngryIntern
03-30-2004, 04:04 PM
Nah, I'm on shore duty now, so no more ships for me!!!! I was stationed on an aircraft carrier for 4 years, and did 2 1/2 deployments...1 yr 3 months at sea for deployments, plus work-ups, so close to 2 years of my 4 years onboard were spent actually at sea!!! Now I work at the submarine base here in san diego and i do maintenance on the submarines.

just getting back from an awesome weekend in Vegas at 1:20 am and having to get up at 5 am to go to work!!!! But the trip was well worth it. We saw the Blue Man Group and I ended up being up a grand in gambling, so it was a pretty damn good weekend.

i was playing mostly Let It Ride $5 tables at The Luxor. I hit a couple of flushes and a 4-of-a-kind worth $1400. The next day I lost a bunch of it, but still came home with over $1000 in my pocket, so I'm very happy!!!

firstadopter

Is Let it ride like poker against the house, I presume.

TheAngryIntern
06-01-2004, 03:55 PM
yeah, it's the one where you put 3 equal bets down, dealer gives you 3 cards, and you can take one bet back if it's not good, then dealer flips up 4th card, and then you can take back the 2nd bet if you still have nothing, but then you have to play on the 3rd bet. I was dealt two 3's, pulled my first bet back, she flipped up a 3, so i stayed in with my last two, cuz i had a 3 of a kind, then she flipped up another 3 for my 4 of a kind. pretty crazy. definitely made the trip just that much more fun. Plus the eye-candy in vegas is simply astounding. It was almost sensory overload from the sheer amount of hotties there.

firstadopter

There's no way my machine will run doom3. (at least the way I want it to) I'll probably wait and see if I want to get a new PC. As with tradition there will probably be quite a few games based on the d3 engine. I've never really been into the crazy kill-all-the-aliens-FPS like doom/quake are, but something cs/dod-related would be cool.

Yeah 5 bags of fertilizer. 49% compost. 51% cow. 5 more bags of topsoil. Hopefully I can get the backyard growing more grass than weeds, but we'll see. Already fried off a section of weeds with plastic, just have to rake it out and prep the ground.

I am on a team that does the imaging of the new computers with the NMCI software and the testing a QA of the computers before they are shipped out to the various military bases. So far it's pretty cool, but i can see how it will probably become kinda boring, as I'm pretty much going to be doing the exact same thing day after day. It's only a 6-12 month contract, so I don't have to do it for too long. I plan on having my certifications completed by the time the contract is up so I can get a real Sys admin job!!!

Yeah, I'm sure we're all thinking about CAG.

TAI, I think all jobs are the same. You eventually end up doing roughly the same thing every day. It just varies how long that takes, and once it's monotonous, it's time to move on, like you say. I'm getting to that point in my job. I'm looking to move on now, just got to find something that looks attractive. It's a shame the people I work with are just brilliant, and that makes work fun.

I have 2 options tho:
1. Move on to a new job doing something I really want to do. (if I can find one)
or...
2. Stay where I am now (which is a University) and carry on with my job, and do a Phd. Cos I work for the Uni it wouldn't cost me anything to do the Phd. They wave the fees. It might be my best chance of getting the Phd (which really interests me), but that would basically confine me to the Uni for the rest of my life. I've been told by one of docs here that people in industry in the UK really don't like to employ people with a Phd cos they're over qualified.

Either way it's a really tough decision.

I can only afford the car cos I don't have a baby like you. More disposable income. We're thinking about moving house too tho, and if we do that, I may have to kiss goodbye to the car. I'm thinking I might leave it until my nsurance renewal comes round in April too... it's so tempting tho!

This is my first bone breakage/crackage, so maybe I was spoiled.

What are people up to these days?

I'm thinking of buying a flat panel plasma. The 27" Samsung HDTV I have is getting long in the tooth.

My wife thinks we need to get a plasma because of the CRT radiation, I'm not going to reject her notion. hehe

arogan
11-21-2005, 03:43 PM
I'm leaning toward a 42" samsung DLP or LCD except the wife is vetoing all hdtv purchases right now.

Plasma has two strikes against it in my book.
- burn in (bad for games). this is the big one unless the latest generation has gotten a lot better.
- fades in brightness over time and NO way to recharge.

At least with DLP you just drop in a new bulb every 3000-4000hrs. I looked up the prices online. It's only $200 per blub. Not as bad as I would have thought.

firstadopter
11-21-2005, 05:47 PM
The 8th generation Panasonics don't have the burn-in issue and the screen lasts something like 60,000 hours or something, so I wouldn't worry too much about it.

I like plasmas because of the great shadow detail, better dark colors/blacks, more surreal lively images, and better for motion (sports).

LCD is better for thinness, reliability, and usually has higher resolutions.

firstadopter
06-17-2006, 09:23 AM
Yeah the USA looked REALLY bad vs. the Czech. I think the team has been vastly over-rated and over-hyped. I mean they have like 2 players that play as starters in the European leagues. And one of their best players Landon, couldn't even be a starter in Europe.

The FIFA ranking is ridiculous, the real ranking is the betting odds, which puts the USA near the bottom.

firstadopter
06-17-2006, 03:56 PM

TheAngryIntern
06-17-2006, 04:14 PM
that was definitely a different team on the pitch from the first USA match. For most of the first half, they actually looked like they came to play. the passing was good, they were hustling to get the ball well. That first red card for the US was a horrible call. the ref pretty much ruined the match.

stupot42
06-17-2006, 05:58 PM
Rendition, you're right, England haven't even turned up yet, but we're through, and hopefully things can only get better for us.

Argentina look like the team of the tournament so far. Brazil were disappointing in their first match, so Argentina are the form team, and bookies joint favourites now... they're just such a skillful team.

I watched the USA - Italy game. I though you guys were unlucky. Keller made some great saves, particularly the one from Del Piero. I think you're being a bit harsh on the team in terms of starting players. McBride is a starter for Fulham in the English Premier League along with Bocanegra (who plays centre back not the left back he played today) and Reyna plays regularly for Manchester City also in the premier league. Eddie Lewis plays for Leeds United every week, and Convey plays regularly for Reading both in the English Championship (the second teir), but Reading were promoted this season. And I think Keller is Borussia Monchengladbach's first choice keeper.

The USA domiated the first half and looked good until the second sending off. What you seem to lack is a goal scorer. All the makings of a good team are there, but you need someone to put the ball in the net. Once someone has a bit of confidence up front you'll come good. I think you can beat Ghana.

I'll shut up now, cos I could go on all day!

firstadopter
06-17-2006, 08:49 PM
The USA played well I admit. Don't get me wrong, I'm rooting for them. When the off-side call came off when they scored what looked like the 2nd goal I was devastated.

The problem is like you said, they don't have any real finishers "first class". And the hype of Landon makes my eyes roll back, he's just not that good vs. the best in the world.

The is a great World Cup though. The new ball really seems to make a difference in scoring, which makes things more exciting. More lively vs. previous World Cups.

firstadopter
06-17-2006, 08:51 PM
The teams that looked the most exciting has been Ivory Coast. Now they have some great strikers, too bad their defense isn't so hot and they lost twice already.

firstadopter
06-18-2006, 04:49 PM
Korea got lucky, but hey you need luck right? They should of lost, but the ref didn't call the 2nd French goal.

Poor Zidane. Not a great way to go.

stupot42
06-20-2006, 04:45 AM
Indeed... Ivory Coast are good to watch, and I was routing for South Korea, but the English and the French don't see eye to eye. However, if the french win their next game they'll almost certainly go through.

I'd like to see the USA go through, they've got a lot of promise.

England Sweden tonight, hopefully a better game than the previous games, but we are leaving out some of our best players.

Sorry not been around much lately, been so busy, and so much world cup action since my last post.

I was sorry to see the states go out. I thought you guys were through for sure, but that's football!

England have no played 4 games and I'm still waiting for them to actually turn up. The BBC plaudits made a good observation after yesterdays game against Equador when he said that England only ever play whoever's in front of them. We'll play poorly against lesser opposition, and then pull a big performance out of the bag for the better opponents. Personally I didn't see that against Sweden, but having said that we were still on 90 seconds away from a win when Sweden equalised. Bring on Portugal!

firstadopter
06-26-2006, 06:10 AM
Congrats on England. Even though they haven't done it with flair, they are in the quarter finals and that is a huge accomplishment! I they probably can beat the depleted Portugal (red card!).

stupot42
06-26-2006, 03:05 PM
Indeed Rendition... what a game last night. We're all quite happy to play a depleated Portugal side. And of course we have a score to settle against Portugal. We lost in the Quarters to them at Euro 2004 on penalties. We had a perfectly good goal disallowed in extra time, which the ref later admitted was a goal, and he chose an end for the penalties which England players objected to because of loose turf. We can dwell, but we'll be eager to beat an old foe.

Speaking of Old Foe's, we could end up playing Portugal in the Quarters who we have a grudge against; Argentina in the Semi's, whom we've never got on with... Hand of God and Falklands War being just a couple of incidents; and then play Germany in the final, another team we have no love lost for. Of course all the results would have to go the right way for that to happen, but what a World Cup it would be for England if they did!

That was a horrid PK call at the end of the Australia vs. Italy game. Don't these ref have any context?

stupot42
06-27-2006, 07:07 AM
We in the UK have been calling for professional referees for years. There's not continuity, and they don't seem to have a clue.

In these days when there's so much money in football there's no reason for there not to be pro referees, and there's also the technology available to stop these things happening. Computers monitoring the balls location compared to the boundry lines, and video replays like in the NFL. Why FIFA won't bring these things in and insists on amature refs is beyond me! The old argument that it would hold games up just doesn't wash for me. They could have the same system the NFL has, but rather than risking a TO for a challenge they could risk loosing a subsitution with a max of 3 challenges per game. It makes sense to me!

Yeah, I can't believe he did that. He's one of those guys you just expect to keep his composure, especially when at that point in the match, we pretty much knew we were going to penalty kicks, and Zidane is one of the best at PK's. Just a complete bonehead move on his part.

It doesn't justfiy what he did, but there is speculation the Italian guy twisted Zidane's nipple. You can see the Italian player reach across Zidane's chest in the first animation.gif above.

Crazy way to go.

The Daily Mail hired an expert lip reader to find out what the Italy's Matterazzi said to spark Zidane's fury. He called him the equivalent of "nig**r" and said his mother was a "terrorist whore". Zidane's mother happens to be seriously ill in the hospital these days. The story of how Zidane's parents suffered in poverty enduring racism to raise Zidane is well-known. In no way do I condone Zidane's action, but with the racism and hateful words so prevalent in today's world, I can understand his reaction. If true, Matterazzi also deserves the scorn and should be ashamed of himself.

101 Greatest George Carlin Quotes

By Jimzarro on May 12th, 2007

George Carlin

The man who says “life is worth losing” turns 70 today. George would say that’s irony, not a coincidence. George Dennis Carlin was born May 12, 1937 in New York City and for the last 47 years he’s been doing stand-up comedy better than anyone else on the planet. In the process he’s pissed off a lot of people and accumulated some of funniest, and most controversial, quotes known to man. Even a list of 101 quotes is just scratching the surface. In no particular order here are his 101 best…

1. I don’t have pet peeves — I have major psychotic fucking hatreds!
2. Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
3. Swimming is not a sport; swimming is a way to keep from drowning. That’s just common sense!
4. A house is just a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff.
5. Have you ever noticed that their stuff is shit, and your shit is stuff?
6. I wanna live. I don’t wanna die. That’s the whole meaning of life: Not dying! I figured that shit out by myself in the third grade.
7. I used to be Irish Catholic now I’m an American — you know you grow.
8. You can’t fight City Hall, but you can goddamn sure blow it up.
9. If the Cincinnati Reds were really the first major league baseball team, who did they play?
10. Honesty may be the best policy, but it’s important to remember that apparently, by elimination, dishonesty is the second-best policy.
11. If it’s true that our species is alone in the universe, then I’d have to say that the universe aimed rather low and settled for very little.
12. It’s never just a game when you’re winning.
13. There are 400,000 words in the English language, and there are seven you can’t say on television. What a ratio that is! 399,993 to 7. They must really be baaaad. They must be OUTRAGEOUS to be separated from a group that large. “All of you words over here, you seven….baaaad words.” That’s what they told us, right? “That’s a bad word!!” Awwww. No bad words. Bad thoughts. Bad intentions, and wooooords. You know the seven, don’t ya? That you can’t say on TV? Shit, piss, fuck, cunt, cocksucker, motherfucker and tits. And tits doesn’t even belong on the list! It seems like such a friendly word. Sounds like a nickname. “Hey, Tits, come here, man! Tits! Meet my friend Toots. Toots, Tits. Tits, Toots”. Sounds like a snack…oh yeah, it is. Right. But I don’t mean your sexist snack, I mean new Nabisco Tits. Corn Tits n’ Sesame Tits n’ Cheese Tits…Tater Tits. Bet you can’t eat just one!!
14. The very existence of flamethrowers proves that some time, somewhere, someone said to themselves, “You know, I want to set those people over there on fire, but I’m just not close enough to get the job done.”
15. The reason I talk to myself is because I’m the only one whose answers I accept.
16. I thought about how mothers feed their babies with tiny little spoons and forks so I wondered, what do Chinese mothers use? Toothpicks?
17. Religion has convinced people that there’s an invisible man…living in the sky. Who watches everything you do every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten specific things he doesn’t want you to do. And if you do any of these things, he will send you to a special place, of burning and fire and smoke and torture and anguish for you to live forever, and suffer, and burn, and scream, until the end of time. But he loves you. He loves you. He loves you and he needs money.
18. Weather forecast for tonight: Dark. Continued dark overnight, with widely scattered light by morning.
19. If a pig loses its voice, is it disgruntled?
20. Why do croutons come in airtight packages? It’s just stale bread to begin with.
21. “I am” is reportedly the shortest sentence in the English language. Could it be that “I do” is the longest sentence?
22. Soft rock music isn’t rock, and it ain’t music. It’s just soft.
23. Reminds me of something my third grade teacher said to to us, she said, “You show me a tropical fruit and I’ll show you a cocksucker from Guatemala.”
24. As soon as someone is identified as an unsung hero, he no longer is.
25. If a movie is described as a romantic comedy, you can usually find me next door playing pinball.
26. The IQ and the life expectancy of the average American recently passed each other in opposite directions.
27. I knew a transsexual guy whose only ambition is to eat, drink, and be Mary.
28. I put a dollar in a change machine. Nothing changed.
29. If you’ve got a cat and a leg, you’ve got a happy cat. If you’ve got a cat and two legs, you’ve got a party.
30. You can prick your finger — just don’t finger your prick.
31. When someone asks you, “A penny for your thoughts,” and you put your two cents in, what happens to the other penny?
32. Ever notice that anyone going slower than you is an idiot, but anyone going faster is a maniac?
33. Isn’t it a bit unnerving that doctors call what they do “practice?”
34. I don’t like to think of laws as rules you have to follow, but more as suggestions.
35. I think it’s the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately.
36. When you’re born you get a ticket to the freak show. When you’re born in America, you get a front-row seat.
37. Eventually, alas, I realized the main purpose of buying cocaine is to run out of it.
38. I never fucked a ten, but one night, I fucked five twos.
39. I never joined the Boy Scouts; I don’t trust any organization that has a handbook.
40. I would never want to be a member of a group whose symbol was a man nailed to two pieces of wood.
41. Have you noticed that most of the women who are against abortion are women you wouldn’t want to fuck in the first place? There’s such balance in nature.
42. So I say live and let live. That’s my motto. Live and let live. Anyone who can’t go along with that, take him outside and shoot the motherfucker. It’s a simple philosophy, but it’s always worked in our family.
43. Catholic — which I was until I reached the age of reason.
44. Here’s a bumper sticker I’d like to see: “We are the proud parents of a child who’s self-esteem is sufficient that he doesnt need us promoting his minor scholastic achievments on the back of our car.”
45. I love and treasure individuals as I meet them, I loathe and despise the groups they identify with and belong to.
46. Beethoven was so hard of hearing, he thought he was a painter.
47. Don Ho can sign autographs 3.4 times faster than Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
48. God bless the homicidal maniacs. They make life worthwhile.
49. I’ve never seen a homeless guy with a bottle of Gatorade.
50. One great thing about getting old is that you can get out of all sorts of social obligations just by saying you’re too

51. If Helen Keller had psychic ability, would you say she had a fourth sense?
52. What year did Jesus think it was?
53. George Washington’s brother, Lawrence, was the Uncle of Our Country.
54. Have you ever wondered why Republicans are so interested in encouraging people to volunteer in their communities? It’s because volunteers work for no pay. Republicans have been trying to get people to work for no pay for a long time.
55. In America, anyone can become president. That’s the problem.
56. Once you leave the womb, conservatives don’t care about you until you reach military age. Then you’re just what they’re looking for. Conservatives want live babies so they can raise them to be dead soldiers.
57. “One thing leads to another”? Not always. Sometimes one thing leads to the same thing. Ask an addict.
58. People who ask, “Can I ask you a question?” Didn’t really give me a choice, did ya there, buddy?
59. Property is theft. Nobody “owns” anything. When you die, it all stays here.

61. The future will soon be a thing of the past.
62. The planet is fine. The people are fucked.
63. The real reason that we can’t have the Ten Commandments in a courthouse: You cannot post “Thou shalt not steal,” “Thou shalt not commit adultery,” and “Thou shalt not lie” in a building full of lawyers, judges and politicians. It creates a hostile work environment.

booo! i got in a minor accident about a week ago. guy crossed in front of me in a parking lot and I didn't see him cuz the sun was in my eyes. it was a very slow speed collision, but since he had a 4x4 truck, the nose of my car went underneath his truck, so the front of my car is all messed up, making it look worse than the accident actually was. Still waiting to hear back from my insurance company to find out what to do next. One interesting thing I found out is they won't send the police out for a non-injury accident. Did not know that.

I got rear-ended a few months ago (slow speed on the off ramp). It was obvious he was an illegal immigrant as he could barely speak english and his car was a very old beat up car. He had the fear of god in his eyes, I just let him go as the damage was just a small 1/4 inch indentation in the bumper. Oh well.

Yeah good call. I would have too. It's not worth it especially if you KNOW he doesn't have insurance anyways. Small enough that it's probably less than your deductible (usually $500), and eh you either live with it or pay out of pocket and get it fixed.

Adjuster looked at it this morning and it's only like $250 worth of damage but it's still going to be in the body shop for 1-2 days. I'm sure I'm going to be stuck with some crappy rental.

The car isn't even 4 months old yet (hasn't even had the first oil change yet). Stupid stupid driver. We were actually at a complete stop (stop and go traffic) then we moved a bit forward like 20ft and THEN she decides to hit me! It's not even one of those I couldn't stop in time because of sudden traffic. Because she stopped in time and then hit me anyways.

My Uncomfortable Experience in a Public Mens Room
by kharma
Wed Aug 29, 2007 at 03:05:01 PM PDT

Two weeks ago, the kids and I went on a trip to visit friends in San Antonio, Texas. On the way we stopped at a rest area just off the interstate. What happened next made me very uneasy...

* kharma's diary :: ::
*

I was drinking coffee heavily so that I would stay awake and needed to relieve myself pretty badly. I pulled into a rest area, locked the car doors, left the kids sleeping in the car, and went into the restroom. When I entered I noticed it was unoccupied except for a pair of sneakers visible under the second stall.

As I unzipped at one of the urinals and began to relieve my burning bladder I heard a voice say "Hey, what's up?". I looked around and there was no one else in the restroom. After a moments hesitation, I answered "Not much".

A little time went by and he says, "What ya doing?".

I didn't feel very comfortable talking to someone in a stall but I didn't want to be rude and answered, "Uh...we are heading to San Antonio to visit friends."

"Want to come over?", he says.

At this point I am really uncomfortable and I finish up and scoot over to the sink to wash up. "No I don't think so.", I replied. Wow, was this something else. I had never even had someone next to me with a wide stance before and now I've got someone in the stall asking me over!

As I reached for the paper towels to dry my hands I hear, "Hey man, can I call you back? There's some asshole in the bathroom answering every thing I say."

I downloaded the trial client a while back, and if I ever need to reinstall WoW, I use that instead of the CD's, as it's so much faster. I got the CE of the expansion, which came with the game on 4 cd's AND on 1 DVD, so I just use the DVD to reinstall the xpac.

I don't have any stocks either, so I'm not worried about that, but we do have a couple of guaranteed return stock trackers, which look like they'll cash out at their original value... not good, but nothing too much to worry about.

As for the banks, well, I'm with a big bank so fingers crossed it will remain solvent.

We're ok for the moment too, but I'm mildly concerned. Ultimately there's nothing we can do apart from save as many pennies as we can and ride it out. Biggest worry for me is my contract at work. We work on year to year contracts until we reach 5 years at which time it becomes permanent. My contract reaches 5 years in April '09 so I should be made permanent and then money worries should be ok, but if they were to decide not to renew it in the current climate I could be in the stink! I don't think that will happen, but who knows!

Well, I got a new job. C#, WPF, 12 month contract (potential to convert to perm at the end), same rate. I start April 1st.
Things are definitely a lot tougher out there. From what I heard when talking to the recruiter, they screened over 40 people for this position, they sent 20 in to interview and none of them got the position.

The technical was pretty brutal. They had me sitting in front of a visual studio 2008, and the output sent to a projection screen, and had me code right there on the spot off the cuff while the two people teching me watched. I wasn't quite sure I did well enough but apparently they were impressed though I did get stumped on one question. They didn't want to know just if you knew the book answer but also if you could implement it, get it to compile, and see how you solved problems live. It kind of reminded me of Swordfish minus the gun to the head and the hookers.
