Sony and Toshiba HD DVD Agreement?

The latest speculation is that Sony and Toshiba are really going to agree on a common standard for HD-DVD. This would be great news from the consumer, but we shouldn't get too excited as these companies are known to keep battling. Reuters says the new common standard could be revealed by May 16th. Let's keep our fingers crossed. A HD-DVD format war would suck for everyone.

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Japan's Sony Corp. (6758.T: Quote, Profile, Research) and Toshiba Corp. (6502.T: Quote, Profile, Research) are close to finalizing a plan to develop a common standard for next-generation DVDs to resolve a three-year-long battle over formats that threatened the industry's growth, a Japanese newspaper reported on Monday.
